Too heavy to digest
Uff had been a long day and seems like I am also now among those "5+ meetings in a day" man. Yeah I didnt realize before getting on to writing this post that I had 5 meetings in a single day..First time in life I think..Good start..
The first one was seminar on "starch"..Though not much went into my head but it was awesome..So many complexities in making starches too...Then had another meeting with some 55+ man with more than 3o years of industrial experience...Big man in the company and he is not happy when u tell Mr. Tucker..He wants to listen his first name from a guy 30 years junior to me..So here I go calling my Boss's Boss by his first name...Lunch time went into thinking that isnt this disrespect if u call some 55+ years older man with his first name..
I had the third meeting with Jim whom I had not met and To make the matter worse, He is 60+. I go in front of him and tell him Hey Jim How r u doing???I felt as if I was disrespecting him btu thats what I told him. Back home in India cousin even 2 years elder to me wont be happy to listen their first name...
But then I convince myself that this how it goes in US of A. So go for my fourth meeting with my advisor here, B.Tech IIT Madras, 1977, which means I went into IIT 22 afters him. Now his turn to make me feel stupid of myself. Here he goes "Prabhat dont be so formal while writing email..No need to write Dear sir.. Just write Ganesh"
..OMG.. Writing Dear sir also doesnt show good on ur part...
But, By now I am kind of used to things here and am never going to show my definition of respect for these guys out here..But it is too heavy to digest as my buffet lunch in indian restaurent today :)
My mind goes back to my first year at IIT..Chemistry first class of IIT..A madam walks in and everyone in the class stands up and speaks loudly Good morning mam!! and she is like O such a loud noise feels like I am in a first year class.. She adds further," This is how it goes..in first year u stand up and wish me..in second year..U keep sitted but then u tell good morning mam..in third year u become smarter and remain both sitted and mum and in final year I have to put on my specs to see if someone is in the class.
Was she meaning that guys shows disrespect as they go to senior years??if u did so mam then its certainly not true. You need to take a drop or two of inspiration from these guys out here who luv to listen their first name and to some extent they are right too as respect comes from within the heart rather than by calling or writing "Dear sir".

the chemistry class story was nice....:(
hi buddy what i liked most about this write-up of urs is the way u have established linkage between these very recent occurences based in USA and ur iit days which occured in india.though the event is almost similar the responses are diametrically opposite.no doubt it bespeaks of the cultural differences implicit in it.take care
